4 Favorite Interior Styling Secrets
This month, Architectural Digest did a great feature called “20 Interior Styling Secrets from AD Stylists” and we thought they had some great styling tips! We’ve listed out our top 4 favorites from the list:
Embrace Emptiness
This one seems counterintuitive… When you have a cabinet full of grandma’s inherited antique china or a collection of old history books, it seems like the perfect opportunity to display them in all their glory. But the idea behind this tip is to allow the space to breath. If you allow for negative space on the walls (read: don’t hang up pictures on every surface!), then you can create a much more defined focal point! Check out the curated design below; the tightly curated frames within an otherwise empty wallscape creates a serious focal point! This concept is hard sometimes, especially for collectors and antique-hoarders (like me!). It seems like an easy concept: don’t hang things up, right?! But the real artistry happens when you carefully curate which items to style together to create that “perfect” focal point. (Or you can trust your designer :-))
Go Au Naturel
This is a pretty easy one, but often overlooked; especially if you don’t have a green thumb! Put in some greenery! Add a living plant to the corner of your living room. Add a topiary to your kitchen island. Bring the outdoors in. And maybe you don’t have a green thumb; that’s ok….there are BEAUTIFUL fake plant options out there - talk to your designer, because they know the best resources for faux plants that look natural (and usually with trade discounts).
Pile Your Lemons High
Grab a bowl of fruit and use it as a focal point in your kitchen. SO EASY. And functional - if you pile up some clementines or apples, maybe your kids might just eat one?! (Wishful thinking?!)
Switch Things Up
If you’re a decorating enthusiast, this will be your favorite tip. Don’t get married to where things are. Switch them up now and again. I love this tip because it’s almost like “permission” to redecorate every once in a while. When I’m getting bored with a space, I start to move a book or a plant around and suddenly it feels brand new! (And your husband will be happy that you’re not buying more “stuff”…..)
