WHAT'S IN A NAME: The Story Behind Ours

A tribute to mom…she truly was the Bee’s Knees!

Like all business owners, we pondered obsessively over what to name our business. Many interior design companies use their name, should we follow suit? We didn’t hate the idea but there was a name that we kept circling back to–one that just felt right on every level: The Bee’s Knees!

The expression had long been a favorite, thanks to my mom and her identical twin Pauline; two of the most amusing souls on the planet. I still remember the first time I heard them say it. It had an immediate impact. I got such a big kick out of the expression. All the sweeter with their brogues and their naturally humorous way of expressing themselves!

Most of our core support group were on board with the idea and the feeling we were trying to convey; aspiring to be the very best, in an approachable and friendly way! (Not everyone got it, and to this day not everyone does. That’s okay. We can’t be a perfect fit for everyone!) The more we played with the idea and researched it, the more comfortable it began to feel. Not to mention the endless possibilities for branding and marketing. Oh, the fun we could have, and still do! We have no regrets. The name fits and it still strikes a happy chord. Check our studio space below. Inside and out, it’s such a great perch!

The definition of Bee’s Knees

When you refer to something as ‘the bee’s knees,’ it means it is of excellent or very high quality. The origin of this expression is mostly unknown, but there are plenty of theories out there. Some say that the phrase refers to how bees buzz around with pollen in sacks on their knees, representing the purest and sweetest labor of love. Others say it is a slight deviation of the word ‘business.’

A historic suggestion implies that it may bee in reference to a ‘bee’ in question who was actually Bee Jackson. A world champion Charleston dancer who was very popular in the New York dance scene in the 1920s.

“Try this chocolate. It’s the bee’s knees.”

“Do you like my new shoes? I think they are the bee’s knees.

The twins also knew the key ingredients to create a happy home. They came to this country with no education and no money, but they had big dreams and an unrelenting work ethic. They saw the potential in curbside treasures and recognized pieces with good bones that needed a little reinventing. From which they created the foundations for their warm and cozy homes.

A lovely garden greeted you upon arrival, and a cozy fire beckoned you in. A hot pot of tea was always at the ready, with something savory baking in the oven. The twins were naturals at making you feel welcome, especially their grandkids. Oh, what a legacy! A happy home is so much more than the pedigree of the pieces. Ours was relatively humble, but thanks to these worker bees, it was a sweet environment indeed!

Here’s to our Queen Bees! They scoff at the notion of royalty and titles, but in our book, they will always be on a pedestal. They inspired our name and, more importantly, our approach to life and work - bring your very best to all you do but don’t forget to add a little light and laughter!

And with that, we close out our year, goodbye 2020! We thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to a brighter 2021, with lots more hugging and gathering and remembering what's really important in life!

Rest in peace sweet Nan, xo
